The Helderberg is where I chose to live.
Most visitors to the Western Cape never make it past Cape Town. Those who follow the N2 past the airport, past the mountain’s shoulder, and down into the Helderberg basin — tend to go quiet for a moment. Mountains behind you. False Bay ahead. Vineyards in between. And almost no one talking about it. This site is my attempt to fix that.
ABOUT THIS SITE
I’m a documentary filmmaker who spent 22 years at the SABC before moving my family to Somerset West. I’ve filmed wine estates, mountain trails, and surf breaks across the Cape — and I keep coming back to the Helderberg. Not because I have to. Because nothing else comes close. What you’ll find here isn’t a tourism board’s version of this place. It’s mine.

Why here, not Cape Town?
Cape Town is magnificent. It’s also exhausting — the traffic, the crowds, the sense that you’re always competing for a table, a parking space, a view. The Helderberg sits 40 minutes down the N2 and feels like a different country.
“You can have breakfast at home, be on a hiking trail in 15 minutes, lunch on a wine estate, and back before the afternoon traffic builds.” That’s not a marketing line. That’s a Tuesday.
The mountains are right there. The beach is right there. Three golf courses are, quite literally, walkable from certain front doors. And the whale season? From July to November, southern rights breach off Gordon’s Bay while the rest of the world is paying Cape Town prices to see nothing.
