Someone had the idea to flood a quarry. It worked.
There is no natural explanation for Blue Rock. It shouldn’t exist — a deep, dark lake sitting in the middle of a former stone quarry just outside Somerset West, ringed by jagged rock walls that drop straight into water of uncertain depth, cables and pylons running a circuit overhead, wakeboarders and water skiers carving through the surface while someone watches from a restaurant perched high on the quarry’s edge with a view of the whole thing.
And yet it works completely. More than works — it has become one of the most distinctive water sport venues in the country, drawing serious riders from across South Africa and, increasingly, from Europe.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE — THE SETTING
Walk down from the entrance and the lake opens below you — dark grey-brown water of considerable depth, the colour of something that has been undisturbed for a long time. At the far end, a jagged wall of exposed quarry rock rises several metres, raw and dramatic, the first cable turn marked by buoys at its base. Along the length of the lake, the quarry walls step and cascade downward in uneven shelves of stone.
On the near side, the grass opens out — a volleyball court, a swimming pool, rock outcrops that double as natural seating. Then, positioned at the upper corner with the entire lake laid out below it, the restaurant and entertainment area. It’s the best seat in the house.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE WATER
Cable Wakeboarding
The full circuit cable system runs a continuous loop around the lake, with multiple pylons handling the corners. Riders of all levels share the water — from first-timers finding their feet to serious athletes working on aerial tricks above the quarry’s dark surface.
Water Skiing
The cable setup accommodates water skiing alongside wakeboarding — the consistent pull speed and flat water making it ideal for technique work and beginner progression.
Paintball
On dry land, a paintball area offers a completely different kind of adrenaline — useful for groups, corporate events, or families who want to split between water and land activities across a single afternoon.
Swimming & Watching
A swimming pool and grassy areas make Blue Rock a full day out for those not on the cable — children swim while parents watch from the rocks or the restaurant terrace above.
WHY EUROPEAN RIDERS COME HERE IN DECEMBER
When northern Europe closes down for winter, professional and semi-professional wakeboarders from Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and beyond have quietly worked out that Somerset West offers something rare — summer conditions, consistent flat water, a full cable setup, and uncrowded riding time that’s impossible to find at home between June and February.
For the visiting tourist who happens to be there on the same afternoon, watching a European professional work a wakeboard trick above a flooded quarry with the Helderberg mountains behind them is — unexpectedly — one of the more memorable things the valley offers.
WHATEVER YOUR LEVEL
First Timer
Instruction and advice is always available on site. The cable does the pulling — your job is simply to hold on and find your balance. Most people are up within a session.
Progressing Rider
The full circuit and consistent cable speed make Blue Rock ideal for working on specific sections, jumps, and transitions.
Serious Athlete
The facility attracts competitive riders and offers the kind of uninterrupted water time that serious training requires.
A NOTE ON SAFETY
Blue Rock takes the water seriously. A lifeguard is on duty at all times, and a rescue boat operates on the lake for riders who fall and need assistance. The quarry water is extremely deep — this is not a paddling pool, and it is treated accordingly.
